Sorry, Mr Bezos, it’s no wonder you’re not welcome in Venice in June
The Amazon founder’s multi-million-dollar three-day wedding hasn’t turned my favourite city into a playground – at this time of the summer, it’s a circus for moneyed, demanding guests fresh off their cruise ships, says Angelina Villa-Clarke

Protesters claims ‘enormous victory’ over wedding venue change
Protesters in Venice have claimed an “enormous victory” after Jeff Bezos was forced to change the venue of his wedding in the Italian city.
Bezos’s wedding to Ms Sanchez was supposed to conclude in an event at the Scuola Grande della Misericordia on Saturday (28 June).
However, the BBC have now reported that guests will not congregate at the Arsenale venue, which is further from the centre of the city.
“We are very proud of this! We are nobodies, we have no money, nothing!” Tommaso Cacciari, from a group calling itself No Space for Bezos, told the broadcaster.
“We’re just citizens who started organising and we managed to move one of the most powerful people in the world – all the billionaires – out of the city.”
A half-dozen Greenpeace protesters also unfurled a giant banner early Monday (23 June) in St Mark’s Square reading: “IF YOU CAN RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY MORE TAX.” Local police quickly folded it up and took it away.
The “No Space for Bezos” movement — a play on words also referring to the bride’s recent space flight — has united a dozen Venetian organisations, including housing advocates, anti-cruise ship campaigners and university groups.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez kick off wedding celebrations with foam party on $500m yacht

In paparazzi photos obtained by the Daily Mail, the pair were seen covered in soap during a foam party with their friends on the boat. Sanchez opted for a black bikini and tan brim hat, while her soon-to-be husband wore green swim trunks and a white bucket hat.
The Mail also noted that there was a “Happy Birthday” sign on the boat, suggesting that the party may also have been in celebration of Sánchez’s son Evan, who turned 19 on Sunday.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s wedding invite slammed over ‘ugly’ design and use of ‘clip art’
Adorned with illustrations of butterflies, birds, feathers, and shooting stars in various shades of muted and vibrant pinks and blues, the invite read: “We are excited for you to join us! We have one early request: Please, no gifts.
“Instead, we’re making contributions in your honor and with gratitude to you for making the journey to celebrate with us in Venice,” the invite continued.
Donations on your behalf are being made to the UNESCO Venice Office to safeguard the city’s irreplaceable cultural heritage, to CORILA to restore the lagoon habitats that protect Venice’s future, and to Venice International University to support research and education for sustainable solutions.”
“This magical place has gifted us unforgettable memories,” the invite, complete with an illustration at the bottom of boats on a canal, concluded. “Our hope is that through these efforts and by you joining us, Venice will continue to inspire wonder for generations to come.”
Further details weren’t included on this section of the invitation.

Protest groups united in anger as Bezos’ star-studded wedding arrives in Venice
Jeff Bezos’s lavish wedding to Lauren Sanchez in Venice this weekend has ignited a wave of protests, with activists decrying the opulent celebrations as a stark symbol of widening wealth disparity and a disregard for the historic city’s residents.
A coalition of a dozen Venetian organisations, including housing advocates, anti-cruise ship campaigners, and university groups, have united under the banner “No Space for Bezos.” This slogan is a pointed reference not only to the perceived lack of space for ordinary Venetians but also to Ms Sanchez’s recent space flight. Their demonstrations highlight concerns over the growing gap between the ultra-rich and the local population.
